Why Your Content Isn't Converting (And the One Question That Fixes It)
If you've ever posted something you were genuinely proud of and watched it fall flat, I want you to hear this clearly: your content probably isn't the problem. Your language is.
I see this constantly with business owners who know their craft inside and out. They're confident, they're skilled, and their content still doesn't convert. Not because the offer is weak. Because somewhere between "I understand this deeply" and "I wrote a post about it," they lost the person on the other side of the screen.
The Assumption That's Costing You Sales
Nobody tells you when you start building a brand that the moment you become an expert in something, you stop being able to see it the way a beginner does.
You use acronyms without thinking twice. You reference concepts assuming everyone's caught up. You write "you know what I mean" energy into your captions, your emails, your blog posts and a huge percentage of your audience just does not know what you mean.
This isn't a small issue. It's one of the top reasons content fails to convert. Marketing research consistently points to the same root cause: content that doesn't directly address the needs, interests, and actual comprehension level of its intended audience will struggle to generate meaningful engagement, no matter how good the underlying idea is.
Your audience isn't disengaged because they don't care. They're disengaged because they don't understand and confused people don't buy.
The Question I Ask Before Every Post Now
Before I publish anything, I ask myself one question:
Would a total beginner understand this?
Not "did I say what I meant." Would someone with zero background in what I do walk away actually getting it?
That single shift changed how I write everything - captions, emails, sales pages, all of it. It's not about dumbing down your expertise. It's about translating it. There's a difference between simplifying an idea and diluting it, and the business owners who understand that difference are the ones people trust enough to buy from.
The Prompt That Saved My Content Strategy
If you want a fast, practical way to test this, here's the exact prompt I use, and I'd encourage you to run your next post through it before you hit publish:
"Explain this to me like I'm 5 and have never heard of [topic] before."
Try it on your last three posts. You'll likely find phrases you assumed were common knowledge that are actually industry shorthand. You'll find sentences that make sense to you and only you. That's not a failure, it's just information. Now you know exactly what to fix.
Why This Matters More Than Almost Anything Else You're Doing
Small businesses that focus on search intent and clarity consistently outperform those chasing broad, vague messaging. The brands that become trusted resources are the ones answering the questions their audience is actually asking, in language that audience actually understands and not the polished industry version of the answer.
This is also, frankly, where the real money is.
Confused people don't take action. Clear people do. If you want more people to click, comment, DM you, and eventually buy, clarity isn't optional - it's the foundation everything else sits on.
Speak to the Audience You Actually Have
Not the one that's already fluent in your world. Not your peers. Not other people in your industry who nod along because they already know the shorthand.
The audience you actually have is made up of real people encountering your work for the first time, trying to figure out if you're the person who can help them. Every acronym you don't explain, every assumption you don't check, is a small closed door between you and someone who wanted to say yes.
Open the door. Speak plainly. Watch what happens to your engagement and eventually, your sales.
