Why What Used to Work Isn't Working Anymore (And You're Not Imagining It)
Part 1 of 2
I'm just going to say this out and I think a lot of us have been feeling but nobody wants to admit.
Something has shifted online. And if you've been sitting there wondering why your content isn't getting the reach it used to, why your engagement has dropped, why it feels like you're working just as hard or even harder but getting less back, you are not imagining it. You are not doing it wrong. The game itself has changed.
I've been paying close attention to this, and I want to break it down for you in plain English because understanding why things have shifted is the first step to figuring out what to do instead. So let's talk about it.
The Internet Got Flooded and Fast
Here's the big one. Over the last couple of years, AI tools became available to everyone. And I mean everyone. Suddenly, creating content, sending emails, writing social posts - all of it became faster and easier than ever before. Which sounds great in theory. But here's what actually happened: the internet got absolutely flooded with content.
Think about your own inbox for a second. How many emails do you delete without opening? How many social posts do you scroll past without a second glance? That's not just you being selective. That's your brain protecting itself from an overwhelming amount of noise. Your audience is doing the exact same thing when they see your content.
The strategies that worked a few years ago such as posting consistently, sending regular emails, showing up on social media - they still matter. But consistency alone is no longer enough to stand out when everyone else is consistent too. What cuts through now is authenticity. Real voice. Real stories. Real you.
People Are Tired of Being Sold To
There's a phrase being used a lot in marketing circles right now: social media fatigue. And honestly? It makes complete sense. For years, our feeds have been a non-stop stream of promotions, pitches, and "limited time offers." People got wise to it. They started scrolling faster, skipping ads, and muting accounts that felt like infomercials.
Your audience — our audience — has become incredibly good at sensing when something is genuine versus when something is a pitch wearing a friendly face. And the moment they sense the latter, they're gone.
This doesn't mean you can't sell online. You absolutely can. But the way people buy has changed. They buy from people they trust. People who have shown up consistently, given real value, and treated them like humans — not leads. The relationship has to come before the sale now, not after.
Ads Got Expensive and Less Effective
If you've ever dabbled in paid advertising such as Facebook ads, Instagram promotions, Google ads - you may have noticed that your budget doesn't stretch as far as it used to. Advertising costs have risen significantly, and at the same time, the data that platforms can use to target your ideal audience has shrunk, thanks to stricter privacy regulations.
What this means practically is that throwing money at ads is no longer the reliable shortcut it once was. Organic reach such as building an audience through genuine content, community, and connection has become not just a nice-to-have, but a necessity.
So What Does This Mean for You?
It means the era of easy wins online is over. But, and this is important, it doesn't mean the era of real wins is over. Not even close.
What it means is that the people who are willing to show up as themselves, build genuine relationships, and focus on actually serving their audience rather than just growing their numbers? Those are the people who are going to thrive in this new landscape.
And the good news? That's exactly what you've been trying to do all along.
In Part 2, I'm going to walk you through exactly what is working right now and how to shift your approach without burning everything down and starting from scratch.
Stay with me. The best part is coming.
Keep Going,
